I’ve heard it said, “If you hang around turkeys, you’re going to be a turkey, but if you hang around eagles, you’re going to soar like an eagle.” Benjamin Franklin had a much different thought on the meaning of the two birds’ character. If it were up to him, the turkey would be on the seal instead. He states in a letter written to his daughter in Philadelphia, ”For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen the Representative of our Country. He is a bird of bad moral character and does not get his living honestly. For the Truth the Turkey is in comparison a much more respectable Bird and withal a true original Native of America...” The state bird for Massachusetts is the turkey. I wonder if Ben had any influence? Which one are you? Why?
