Many of our experiences, positive and negative, involve flowers. In May, as the Lilly of the Valley are at their peak of deliciousness, my mother would pick a vase full of these white drops of beauty and set them in my bedroom. In the summer when I spent a week at grandma & grandpa's, grandma taught me how to draw "no-fail" roses. My grandmother and I visit my grandpa and place roses on his grave; roses were a gift he would give her every Wedding Anniversary. I grew up smelling, studying and picking flowers so it was just natural to begin painting them. During the workshop I will provide my understanding of flowers, watercolor techniques and tips for a good composition as we share the ways these complex gifts of creation can make us smile, cry, laugh and heal. An offshoot to this workshop is “Bird Watching” in which I supplement birds for flowers. |

Using watercolors and 140 lb. paper, students will design/ compose a cropped image and paint a well composed picture of a flower while incorporating at least three techniques demonstrated by the artist; the elements of design(most specifically line, shape and form), masking, mixing and layering colors while utilizing the techniques of wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry and dry brush. |

Students will be able to define and perform the following watercolor techniques; wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, dry brush and lifting. |

Students will complete a self evaluation rubric as well as discuss and critique each other’s work. |
